About Our School

Los Ranchos Elementary is located in the beautiful Edna Valley just southeast of the city of San Luis Obispo. Three rural schools, Corral de Piedra (founded in 1876), East Santa Fe (founded in 1878), and Independence (founded in 1909) were united to form what is now Los Ranchos Elementary.

In 1957 the newly formed Los Ranchos School District passed a bond to build a new three classroom school which was expected to accommodate 65 students. Los Ranchos School opened its doors in December 1958.

To support a growing population, a Multi-Purpose Room was built in 1972. This room was used as a lunch room, library, meeting room, and when enrollment grew even faster the room was used as a classroom.

1988 brought more students and not enough rooms. The solution was to add 9 portable classrooms which are still being used today. (Rooms 13 to 21) Construction on twelve new permanent classrooms was completed in 1990.

Finally in 1998, a major remodel was undertaken. A new administration building and Multi-Purpose Room were added. The Kindergarten area gained a new playground as well as new play equipment that same year.

Our school enrollment has fluctuated greatly over the years, from the original 65 to a peak of 650 in 1997. Our current enrollment is 370.
